A Piece Written For a More Rightward Tilting Audience: Nothing to See Here
This week, we celebrate the birth of the man Christians call the Prince of Peace. As in so many years in the past, we observe Christmas in a world not at peace, and where few of the lessons Christ came to teach are being practiced. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we learned appalling details about how our country, an ostensibly Christian nation, conducted a systematic program of torture that inflicted pain and even death on people who, in some cases, were wrongly suspected of affiliations with terrorists. In the words of John McCain, a man who suffered torture himself, the torture conducted by the CIA was “a stain on our honor,” and a program that “did much harm, and little good.”
Readers who have read my columns even occasionally will know that I’m not usually a big fan of John McCain. He has, in my view, often been reckless, and in picking Sarah Palin to be his running mate in 2008, he showed just how irresponsible such calculating recklessness could be.
