In the immediate years after 9/11, one of the staples of my stand-up comedy–and even a one person show I performed–was this simple theme: On September 10, I went to sleep an American. On September 11, I woke up an Arab.

The idea being that before the 9/11 terrorist attack, I was viewed by most as a typical white American. But in the years that followed 9/11, my Arab heritage and fact that my last name included the word “Allah,” caused me–and others in my community–to become the target of discrimination, hate and even death threats.

Today I need to update that message to reflect where not just me–but all of us find ourselves: We went to sleep in a democratic Republic. We woke up in a fascist state.

This is where we are heading. Just look at what we’ve seen over the past few days alone from the Trump regime, ranging from the open violation of federal court orders to Marco Rubio justifying stripping a green card from a person for simply being associated with causes the regime opposes to Trump declaring the pardons President Biden issued to the Jan. 6 House committee members were “void.”
