HERD ABOUT IT?

Here is an interesting little video about the inefficiencies of food production and distribution on our planet. One very interesting comment is that “80% of the worlds undernourished are farmers”. Primarily they are talking about farmers in third world countries. It is true though that many farmers in the US are dependent on food stamps. Many more are inadequately nourished because they cannot afford healthy food. Our system of monoculture, means farmers are working long hard hours to produce one commodity. They must try to earn enough from that commodity to pay for their other needs. In the not so distant past farmers would have produced most everything they needed on the home farm. Excess production would be sold to purchase the things they did not produce themselves.
I was directed to this movie by Utne Reader. They also had an interesting article on “the Unnatural Way We Work” which I believe relates to the demise of agriculture and small town life. Another was a slide show of “12 Things You Should Never Put in Your Mouth” food? products from the dark side.
