Justice Department, EPA Announce $15 Billion Settlement In VW Emissions Fraud

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Donald Trump fired the acting Attorney General, Sally Q. Yates, after learning that she had downloaded a copy of the United States Constitution to her computer, Trump told reporters on Monday night.

According to the Trump Administration’s code of ethics, established by Steve Bannon, a counsellor to the President, “possessing, reading, or referring to the United States Constitution” is a violation that is punishable by termination.

Suspecting that Yates was in breach of that rule, Bannon seized Yates’s computer at the Justice Department and discovered that she had secretly downloaded a complete copy of the 1789 document.

I can totally prove Clinton won more than 5 million more votes than Trump. No, really — I can!

If you believe the official tally of the 2016 presidential race, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by a margin of 2.9 million ballots. But are those numbers rigged? If there’s one thing that the early days of Trump’s regime has shown us, there are facts, and then there are alternative facts.

The media have been quick to point out that Trump’s claim that between three and five million illegal votes were cast this cycle is “absurd,” as The Washington Post put it, or a “lie,” according to The New York TimesBut so far, no reporter has asked about Trump’s insistence that all of those votes went for his opponent. Maybe we can assume that the “illegals” split 65-35 for Clinton — roughly the same as Hispanic and Asian citizens — but voters who moved and remained registered at their old address shouldn’t skew significantly toward one party or the other, and those who died would presumably be older and whiter — the very Fox News demographic that heavily favors the Republican Party.

This Group Is Raising Money for Donald Trump. But Where Is It Going?

And it was started Inauguration Day? Really? -OEN

A newly formed political action committee is using Donald Trump’s name and trademarked slogan—“Make America Great Again”—in an unusual fundraising ploy. The group, the Great America PAC, has no connection to the Trump campaign, but it has been blasting out emails soliciting donations that it claims will be channeled directly to Team Trump. In a recent email, the PAC implored donors to help “build a grassroots wall of support around Donald Trump by chipping in at least $5 to have your name placed on his official FEC report by signing the ‘I Support Donald Trump’ petition.” On the PAC’s website, donors are asked to donate between $5 and $1,000.

The website notes that the first $5 of each donation will be sent to the Trump campaign. And Dan Backer, the group’s treasurer, tells Mother Jones that this money is indeed “earmarked” for Trump. What happens to the rest of the money, for any donations greater than $5, is not clear. The email does promise to use money the group raises to build a vaguely described grassroots operation that will help support Trump. But there’s no telling how much of the money gathered by this Trumpy PAC will directly fund pro-Trump activities.

Scientists Baffled by McConnell and Ryan’s Ability to Stand Upright Without Spines

Senate Legislators Address The Press After Their Weekly Policy Luncheons
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Calling it a “medical mystery of the first order,” scientists are baffled by the ability of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan to stand upright without the benefit of spines.

Doctors at the University of Minnesota Medical School, who have been studying the skeletal structures of both Republicans for months, believe that their ability to stand, walk, and even break into a brisk trot when confronted by reporters’ questions is “virtually inexplicable.”

Hours After Landing in U.S., Cleveland Clinic Doctor Forced to Leave by Trump’s Order

Introduction courtesy Jodi L Sisson @ Thom Hartmann Blogger’s Group. Article that follows via link provides more information.

Dr. Asgari, a specialist in human genomics and genetics of infectious diseases, holds a doctorate from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. She authors papers with titles like, “Disease-Corrected Hepatocyte-Like Cells from Familial Hypercholesterolemia-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells,” and has given lectures on how rare genetic defects might make infants more susceptible to viral respiratory infections. (

Last May, Soumya Raychaudhuri (PhD, MD), an associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, attended a talk by Dr. Asgari at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. Dr. Raychaudhuri’s lab studies “the basis of autoimmune disease using techniques in human genetics, bioinformatics, and systems biology,” so both he and Dr. Asgari work in related fields.

He was impressed enough with her talk that he invited Dr. Asgari to work on a tuberculosis project at his laboratory. Dr. Asgari agreed, and was granted a J-1 Visa to work in the United States along with two years of funding for her research by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Earlier today, after months of planning, Dr. Asgari boarded a plane from Switzerland to Frankfurt. She then attempted to board a plane for the United States, where she was promptly rejected. You see, even though she lives in Switzerland, Dr. Asgari is an Iranian national. So she no longer qualifies for Trump’s America.

It doesn’t matter that she already had an approved Visa, and it certainly doesn’t matter than she was going to be engaged in high-level research aimed at defeating tuberculosis, Type 1 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. She’s Iranian. She’s Muslim. She’s not welcome. With no other choice, Dr. Asgari returned to Switzerland where she now has no job and no place to live.

This is who we are now.
